Grading

Beginner

The beginner belts represent the start of our martial arts journey. The most important principle to learn early on is respect for oneself and for others. To understand that we should listen to ourselves and ask for guidance when needed, as well as to listen to what others have to say.

Intermediate

The intermediate belts represent a progression of complexity, challenge and mentality. Communicating clearly with your partners whilst rising to the higher physical and mental challenges takes work. Progression is not a single goal, but a continuous process of developing ourselves as martial artists and as people.

Advanced

These belts represent commitment to ourselves now, and in the near future. Our journey towards our goals is rarely, if ever, a straight line. We will be delayed by barriers that we wish were not in our way. But if our destination is important enough to us we can invest time and effort in improving our ability to break through those barriers, as well as seeking help from those who can assist us.

Red Belt

PAMA - Red martial arts belt tied up.

The red belt represents a commitment to others. These are for students who have something to offer the other students, through their own experience and knowledge of martial arts.

Black Belt

PAMA - Black martial arts belt tied up.

The black belt represents everything that the other belts represent, as well as the perceived paradox that we both have knowledge and expertise that is of use to others, but also have so much more to learn for ourselves both inside and outside martial arts. There is no end point to progression and development, just further travels and new directions in our overall journey.
